THE LEGEND BEGINS

As the Mulawins battle against the Ravenas, and the humans against the winged beings, the Chosen One is born...

Rasmus, the King of the Ravena, had borne away a newborn Mulawin egg and was going to destroy it. Pursuing him was a Mulawin warrior, Aguilar, who tried to save the egg. In their aerial battle, Rasmus slayed Aguilar, but he also dropped the egg and lost sight of it.

A dying Aguilar obtained a promise from his son, young Aguiluz, to always watch over that egg and the child that would be born from it. Tearfully, Aguiluz made the promise as his father breathed his last before his eyes.

The Mulawin egg had fallen safely in some hay outside the house of Lourdes, the local witch-doctor of Tierra Fuego. Lourdes marveled at the size of the egg and brought it inside her house. Aguiluz saw this, but fearful of human beings, he dared not take the egg from her.

Soon, the egg hatched and Lourdes found a baby girl inside it. She knew then that the child must be the daughter of a Mulawin. Lourdes, who had just lost her close friend, Veronica, in a tragic event, happily adopted the infant and named her, Alwina. Unknown to Lourdes, Alwina was, in fact, the daughter of Veronica by the Mulawin warrior, Bagwis.

Even as a child, Alwina displayed uncanny abilities that frightened other children in her town, so that they refused to play with her. She could run with superhuman speed and was able to see at a great distance. Alwina also discovered that she could understand the speech of birds.

One evening, a lone owl introduced himself as Pagaspas to Alwina, and the two became friends. In truth, this owl had been sent by Aguiluz to watch over Alwina for him. Once, when a cruel girl named Savannah lost to Alwina in a race, she punished Alwina by beating Pagaspas with a stick. Lourdes was able to revive him only with the miraculous berdeng binhi. There were only three of these.

Alwina’s only friends were Biba, a local girl, and Gabriel, the son of a haciendero, Don Lucio, the most powerful man in Tierra Fuego. Gabriel was handicapped; he could not walk and had to be pushed in a wheelchair. One day, they were playing in the water and Gabriel nearly drowned. To save his life, Alwina searched for and found the green binhi and made him swallow one. Not only was he revived; the boy was cured of his disease and could walk. Lourdes rebuked Alwina for this and told her that she had paid a great price for the binhi. Thus, she would use them only on those who really deserved it.
